Track & Field News

For the week of March 2010

It's been a very busy time of year for athletics in Nelson with athletes roaming Oceania, setting personal bests, winning titles, and preparing for the New Zealand Track and Field Championships. To catch you up to date, here are the newspaper accounts of the most recent meets, beginning with last weekend's Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney:

Alex Jordan of Athletics Nelson won the Men's Under 20 division in the 400m at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney last weekend. His time of 47.61secs was one-one hundreths of a second off his personal best. Hazel Bowering-Scott, also of Athletics Nelson and representing the New Zealand Oceania team, finished second in the Women's 18 and under 200m in 25.05secs. Bowering-Scott set a Tasman Centre record of 25.04secs in the 200m preliminaries. Bowering-Scott also finished 7th in the 100m final in 12.46secs and awaits possible selection for Oceania to the inaugural World Youth Olympics in Singapore in August.

Then we have the Canterbury Championships March 5-7 in Christchurch:

Athletics Nelson's Hazel Bowering-Scott and Chris Line left their competition and Tasman Centre records behind at the weekend's Canterbury Athletics Championships in Christchurch.

Bowering-Scott led off the meet on Friday by rolling past Southland's Rebecca Gibson into the home straight of the Women's 19 and under 200m and winning by two metres. Her 25.38sec clocking surpassed her own W16 centre record of 25.51sec and continued a streak of success at QE II Stadium.

"This is a good track for me," said Bowering-Scott, who also won W19 100m on Sunday in 12.71sec, "Everytime I get a PB (personal best) it seems to be in Christchurch." Bowering-Scott will return to QE II in three weeks for the New Zealand Track and Field Championships. But she's off on Wednesday for the Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney. The meet will be a selection for the Oceana team to the World Youth Olympics in Singapore in August.

Line's prospects for national gold look promising with his 53.82m throw in the M16 javelin on Sunday. He won the event by four metres and his effort surpassed Cameron O'Neill's M16 centre mark of 53.12m. Line also finished second in Saturday's M19 javelin with 47.23m.

Bowering-Scott and Line sparked a flurry of victories and personal bests from their Athletics Nelson teammates, who represented Tasman Centre in the three-day Canterbury competition.

Andrew Moore won the M19 high jump with 1.75m, the M19 long jump with 6.56m, and the senior men's long jump with 6.59m. He was also fourth in the M19 100m in 11.65sec. Wade Cooper won Sunday's M16 triple jump with a personal best 12.47m and finished second in the M16 high jump with 1.75m.

Courtney Clarke led a 1-2-3 finish for Tasman in the W19 discus with 35.93m. Missy Seymour was second with 35.62m. Meghan Kirk, who won the W19 shot put with 11.49m, was third with 29.48m. Clarke also won the W16 discus with 36.40m, and Seymour also finished second in the senior women's shot with 10.61m.

Brendon Barnett finished second in the M16 long jump with 6.25m, third in the M19 long jump with 6.26m, and third in the M16 triple jump with 11.86m. Mitchell Paterson, who competed in five events, finished third in the M16 discus with 34.86m.

Brodie Hewlett finished third in the senior men's 200m with 23.35sec and fourth in the M19 100m with 10.51sec. Garry Creegan-Almond was third in the M19 200m in 23.15sec. and fourth in the M19 400m with 51.36.

Craig Lautenslager had the top finish among the Tasman distance runners, after battling Canterbury's Brett Clifford down the final home straight of the M16 1,500 and finishing second in a seven-second personal best of 4min19.86sec.

Harry Dixon lowered his 5,000m best by nine seconds with a third-place finish in the senior men's race in 14min47.27sec. Josie Wilcox, competing her first-ever 5,000m on the track, ran 17min41.16sec for third place in the W19 event.

Personal bests also were recorded by Matt Lambert, 3min53.18sec for sixth in the senior men's 1,500m, and by Ewoud Noordeloos, 1min59.68sec for ninth in senior men's 800m and 4min2.50sec for 11th in the senior men's 1,500m.

Joe Dixon was sixth in the M19 1,500m in 4min18.37sec, Peter Meffan was fifth in the senior men's 5,000m, and Donald Hilson was fifth in the M19 5,000m and eighth in the M19 1,500m.

And, finally, the final Twilight Series Meet of the season on February 26:

Josie Wilcox's personal best came at the end of the month instead of the beginning. But in her final 3,000m race of the season yesterday at Athletics Nelson's final Twilight Series Meet of 2009-2010, Wilcox made it happen.

Her time of 10min14.06sec was a second better than what she ran on the same Saxton Field Athletics Track at the Hester Shield Meet on November 20. Wilcox, the only female of the nine competitors, was the first to cross the finish line. Peter Newbury was second in 10min30.38, and Tim Cross was third in 10min37.63.

At Wilcox's first race of the month, the New Zealand women's 19 and under 3,000 meter championships in Dunedin, Wilcox was tripped by a novice runner in the first 40m. She got up off the track, ran third the entire race, and nearly lapped the woman who tripped her.

Wilcox planned to try again at last week's Twilight Series meet but caught a cold and decided not to compete. But, determined to run a personal best, she set off again last night. Her coach, Greg Lautenslager, paced her at 80 seconds per lap, a clip that would have made her the first Nelson junior to break 10 minutes for 3,000m.

Wilcox fell off the pace after the first four laps but held on to achieve her top time. She will run her first-ever 5,000m next Saturday in Christchurch and aim for a medal at that distance at New Zealand Track and Field Championships on the QE II Stadium track at the end of March.

Brendon Barnett proved to be rounding into top form with a winning long jump of 6.46m. He also had jumps of 6.44m, 6.37m, and 6.36m.

Athletics Nelson sprint coach Brodie Hewlett won the men's 100m in 11.56sec, and his pupil Garry Creegan-Almond won the 200m in 23.22sec. Hazel Bowering-Scott won the women's 100m in 13.01sec and the 200m in 26.61sec.

Gareth Jessop won the men's 800m in 2min15.62sec. Nyle Sunderland held off Wendy Healey in the homestretch to win the women's 2,000m racewalk. Peter Hague won the men's walk in 11min32.89sec.

The Friday night Twilight Series Meets attracted many more competitors than the past seasons Wednesday night Club Nights at Trafalgar Park and will continue again next spring.

The Nelson-Marlborough Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Blenheim on March 10 produced some outstanding performances - and many from athletes not involved in a club and receive very little coaching. In fact, in events other than the middle-distance and distance events, only one or two of the age-group winners in each event are in a club. Let's encourage these athletes to join Athletics Nelson next season and see how well they can really perform in this sport.

A number of lost items - including an Australian team jacket, black biker's jacket, and a light brown sweat-top - have been found during the past several weeks. If you have lost something at Saxton Field, please call the head coach.

A team of 25 athletes - including 24 from Athletics Nelson and one from Marlborough - will represent the Tasman Centre at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships at QE II Stadium in Christchurch, March 26-28. This is one of the largest Tasman teams in many years, and we hope to bring home a slew of medals.
